Heute ist der erste Schultag im neuen Jahr. Eigentlich wäre heute schulfrei, da Feiertage, die auf einen Wochenendtag fallen, am Freitag davor oder Montag danach abgefeiert werden. Die Banken haben geschlossen, die Post, die Bücherei. Keine Ahnung warum heute trotzdem Schule ist, da der Neujahrstag ja gestern an einem Sonntag war.C. hat heute ein neues T-Shirt aus der Schule mitgebracht von ihrer Begabtenförderklasse ("Gifted Program"), s. Foto. Das diesjährige Thema dieser Klasse ist auf dem T-Shirt illustriert ("Art - A Mirror of Man's Journey Through Time" - "Kunst - Spiegel des Menschen auf seiner Reise durch die Zeit"). Morgen fährt C. nämlich auf einen Tagesausflug ins Kunstmuseum nach Tampa, da müssen/sollen alle Schüler das T-Shirt tragen.
Es ist schön, mal wieder Gelegenheit zu haben, C. aus der Schule abzuholen. Das kann ich diese Woche tun, da ich Urlaub habe.
Auf dem Rückweg von der Schule, sind wir noch bei Publix (Supermarkt) vorbeigefahren, um ein paar Lebensmittel zu kaufen. An der Kasse konnte ich alle Artikel auf einem schönen großen, ca. 15 Zoll großen LCD-Schirm ablesen. Lange gibt's das noch nicht, vielleicht seit Anfang Dezember (und auch nur bei Publix, glaub ich), aber praktisch ist es. Jedenfalls bemerkte ich, daß die Kassiererin die Tomaten zu hoch berechnet hatte ($2.99 statt $2.49 pro Pfund). Als ich sie darauf aufmerksam machte, entschuldigte sie sich mehrfach für den Fehler und bemerkte eher nebenbei, daß die Tomaten mich nun gar nichts kosten würden. Weiß nicht, ob das zum Standardservice von Publix gehört, oder das nur ein Einzelfall war. Hab' nicht weiter gefragt.
In diesen Tagen ist es sehr warm für die Jahreszeit - auch für die hiesigen Verhältnisse. Heute in der Sonne ist es gute 25°C warm. Am Abend wollen wir Hamburger grillen, das können wir sicherlich draußen machen. Am 2. Januar! Immer wieder schwer begreiflich für mich, der den größten Teil seines Lebens zwischen dem 47. und dem 54. Grad nördlicher Breite verbracht hat. Jetzt sind es 20 Breitengrade weniger.
Today ist the first day of school in the new year. School should have been out today, since federal holidays are observed on the Monday after or Friday before if they fall on a weekend. Banks are closed, the post office, the library. No idea, why school is in today anyway, since New Year's Day was yesterday, on a Sunday.
Today C. came home from school with a new T-Shirt from her gifted class (see photo). This year's motto for "Gifted" is Art, so that's what the T-shirt is all about ("Art - A Mirror of Man's Journey Through Time"). Tomorrow C. is going on a field trip to the Tampa Museum of Art, and that's when all students going are supposed to wear that shirt.
It's nice to be able to pick up C. from school again. I can do that since I'm on vacation this week.
On the way back from school we stopped at Publix to get some groceries. As the articles were scanned at the cash register I could see them all listed neatly on a 15-inch LCD screen. I've noticed these screens recently at Publix, they are fairly new, and I think only Publix has them so far. They've had them since the beginning of December or so. Anyway, when I saw the tomatos listed, I noticed that the cashier had overcharged me ($2.99 instead of $2.49/lbs). I pointed it out to her, and she repeatedly apologized for the error. She also mentioned that she now would not charge me for the tomatos at all. Not sure if this is Publix's policy or whether she made an exception. I didn't ask any further.
It's pretty warm these days for this time of year - even for Florida. It's around 77°F in the sun. Tonight we want to throw some hamburgers on the grill. We'll probably be able to do that outside. On January 2nd! Still amazes me ... someone who's spent most of his life between the 47th and 54th degree of latitude North and now lives 20 degrees closer to the equator.
